All of the students in urban areas who received a decent education were sent to be re-educated through labor. This form of re-education consisted of the idea that through hard labor the "patients" would be cured, but more or less brainwashed into forgetting their initial negative ideas towards chairman Mao and the Chinese government. The idea was for these urban folk to learn from the proletariat (working-class countrymen) to conform to Mao's beliefs.
