With Luo going away for a month leave to see his mother, the narrator is asked to watch over the Little Seamstress for him. like a loyal friend, he agrees, and soon find himself hiking over to her village every day while fantasizing about becoming a secret spy, or super soldier. All goes well. For a few weeks at least.
One day, the narrator's little fantasy crumbles around him. The Little Seamstress was the prettiest girls on the mountain. As such, she had literally a mountain of admirers. After a day of housekeeping for her, the narrator was confronted by a mob of less fortunate young men from the mountain.
Chasing him and yelling insults about how he
washed the Little Seamstress's underwear for her, they threw rocks and insults every step of the way home, striking his left ear with a stone.
Afterward, seething back in his shack, the narrator tries to take his mind off the situation by reading his favorite book in the light of all the lamps he can find. Yet the throbbing in his ear and thoughts of the mob distract him, and as the last lamp goes out, he finally gives in to his true distraction... I won't elaborate.
