The Princess of the Mountain

The two characters met the Little Chinese Seamstress as they went to meet their old friend Four-Eyes. First, they met her father as he was going away to tailor for one of his clients. A few weeks later, Luo and the narrator returned to the house and met the Seamstress, who they asked to lengthen Luo's trousers by five centimeters. After that she invited them to stay for boiled water, and then Luo made a bet with her that there were similar. He won the bet, and she extended his trousers for free. On the way home, Luo denies that he had fallen in love with the Seamstress.

The Little Chinese Seamstress was introduced through the mention of her shoes. They were made out of canvas and were simple yet elegant. This is the way that she is also, fairly simple yet very beautiful. She did not have a formal education, and could not read, however amongst the ignorant peasants she had an air of importance. As the novel progresses, the Little Seamstress learns about the outside world by reading foreign works of literature with the help of Luo.
