The narrator possesses a very distinctive skill. He is a skilled violinist, that majors in classical music, such as the
sonatas written by
Mozart. The
violin appears frequently in the story and is usually accompanied by
happiness, because the narrator is happy for the link to his old culture. Even though he has to lie about the titles of his pieces, because much of his repertoire is banned under Mao's regime. The only skill that the narrator sees him self accomplishing is playing the violin.
