Luo arrived at the village because his father is one of the best dentists in China, in fact he even worked on Chairman Mao's teeth. His father is currently viewed as a class enemy because he openly admitted working on Mao's teeth. This caused him to be publicly humiliated. The Narrator is best friends with Luo and they were sent to the same village. They meet the Little Chinese Seamstress in her house to lengthen Luo's pants whereupon Luo instantly falls in love with her.
Luo is known to the villagers as a great story teller, with the narrator accompanying him in the telling of stories. Every so often, they would venture to the village of Yong Jing and watch plays. Then Luo would retell these stories to the villagers for entertainment. When called upon to tell one of these stories to the seamstress's town, Luo falls ill with malaria. The show must be cancelled and in the seamstress's house, sorceresses attempt to vanquish the sickness from him.
