This is the story of a boy and his friend, Luo. They are the sons of affluent professionals, condemned to forever labor in the harsh mountains of the countryside, unless they can somehow overcome their family's shame, a three in a thousand chance in the face of one of the most oppressive social upheavals in history- the Cultural Revolution.

The Cultural Revolution was a fearsome social upheaval that took place when the Communist regime in China decided to mobilize the populace into removing and eliminating all symbols of bourgeois excess and oppression. Every aspect of live imaginable was to be scrutinized and purified for the sake of the Revolution. Valuable antiques, works of art, literature, and many such other valuables were ceremoniously or thoughtlessly destroyed and burned.
