Themes
There are many varied themes set by the author that range far and wide across the bleak landscape of the region of Sichuan. These themes are a reflection on human nature (particularly in times of duress) and its many facets - including fear, desperation, and love. Themes also concern the background of China during these troubling times, from the propaganda spread by the Communist Party to the "reeducation" designed to force "enemies of the people" and their families to the bleak mountainside during China's infamous Cultural Revolution.
