The village is small and uncivilized, according to Lou's and the narrator's standards. The village has a single headman who oversees everyone else who all work on the farms. The headman is quite the communist, but the rest of the village does not really care for politics, many of them had been opium farmers before the revolution started.
Right over a mountain path is where the Seamstress lives.
