During the Narrator's month with the little seamstresss, he has to aid her in getting an abortion for Luo's baby. The act of both her pregnancy and the abortion are extremely illegal, and procuring the abortion is incredibly difficult. The Narrator is able to do it after speaking with an old preacher, who spoke out against the party even in death, and by speaking with the district gynecologist honestly, in addition to giving him a book.
This doesn't change the Seamstress however as she continues her search to be like a city girl, eventually leading up to her departure. Never speaking of the abortion to Luo, the Seamstress and the Narrator continue to act as if nothing had happened. In the last few pages the boys are both shocked and hurt to find out that she was leaving without a single goodbye, so Luo chased her only to be followed by the Narrator. They meet at last in the same grave yard that the boys met Four Eyes' mother, to learn from the Seamstress that "A woman's beauty, is a treasure beyond price."(Sijie 187) Before she runs off in search of better things, in search of a better life.
