Setting

Huang_shan

In southwestern China, during the reign of Mao Zedong, communist leader of the People's Republic of China, the narrator and Luo find themselves at the foot of the mountain famed for copper and used for coal-- "Phoenix of the Sky". On and around this mountain, one of the largest in China, are many small villages and one small town-- Yong Jing (also the name of the region).
The village inhabited by the fellow villagers of Luo and the narrator is located up very high on Phoenix of the Sky; the only way to get that high up the mountain is to take a centuries old thin wooded path. Here lies the smallest of all the region's villages with people who have never been exposed to urban luxuries that their visitors have; an alarm clock becomes an obsessive fascination.
