Luo- The son of a famous Chinese dentist. He publicly claimed that he had cleaned the teeth of Mao Zedong. This is a horrible crime and he was publicly humiliated as a result. The dentist is looked at as an enemy. Luo and his best friend, The Narrator, are sent to a village called the Phoenix of the Sun to be re-educated by the peasants. Due to his parent's acts, Luo has a chance of 3/1,000 of ever returning to the urban life and his family. Luo falls ill with malaria while working in the mines. He is weak however, continues to live his life by doing his labor and supporting his friend. Luo meets a young chinese girl, a daughter of a famous tailor, and feels a deep romantic connection with her. Luo is a talented storyteller and uses this talent to share with the villagers.
