The Headman is bothered by one of his teeth. He uses blackmail to get this fixed. Nonetheless, it is a nagging issue for the Headman. In rural China in areas like that of the Phoenix Mountain, finding a doctor or a dentist can be extremely difficult. However, the narrator still feels hatred towards the Headman because of his intolerance for modern literature.
