Four-Eyes is another City-Youth sent to the Phoenix of the Sky for re-education during the Cultural Revolution. He is friends with Luo and the narrator, however he is very reluctant to trust them, or anyone for that matter, with his suitcase. The boys spend the vast majority of this section doing things to try and earn Luo's trust so that they may find out what is in the suitcase/read the books in the suitcase. They continually do numerous favors for Luo to try and convince him to lend them another book after they have read
Ursule Mirouët. Despite their efforts, Four-Eyes never gives them another book.
