Four Eyes

Four-Eyes is another City-Youth sent to the Phoenix of the Sky for re-education during the Cultural Revolution. He is friends with Luo and the narrator, however he is very reluctant to trust them, or anyone for that matter, with his suitcase. The boys spend the vast majority of this section doing things to try and earn Luo's trust so that they may find out what is in the suitcase/read the books in the suitcase. They continually do numerous favors for Luo to try and convince him to lend them another book after they have read Ursule Mirouët. Despite their efforts, Four-Eyes never gives them another book.

Ursule Mirouët is a book by French author Honoré de Balzac, and is a part of his great work, the Comedie Humanie. It is about an orphan girl whose name is that of the book who is taken in by Doctor Minoret, a retired Parisian physician living in Nemours. Minoret becomes fond of Ursule, however he dies some time later. This leaves the matter of his fortune, which it is presumed will be divided, or go to Ursule. One of the prospective heirs, however, steals the fortune from Ursule, who is then reduced to a life of poverty and living on the streets. However, by the end, it all works out and Ursule receives the happiness she deserves.
