A New Beginning

Sunrise_in_caorle

During the Cultural Revolution in China, two teenagers from a big city, Luo and the narrator, are sent to the rural Yong Jing near Phoenix Mountain. Coming from an educated background, the boys are to be reeducated by the poor peasants of the area. They are forced to work very difficult manual labor, working to a point in the mines where Luo contracts Malaria. Because their parents are enemies of the state, he is given an infinitesimally small chance to return to their homes.

"In 1971 there was little to distinguish us two-one the son of a pulmonary specialist, the other the son of a notorious class enemy who had enjoy the privelege of touching Mao's teeth," (Sjie 11).
Luo's father was a dentist who made the mistake of talking about fitting Mao with new teeth, alleging there was something wrong with the Chairman's teeth. The narrator's parents were doctors, charged with the crime of being "stinking scientific authorities".
