West End Avenue

Not quite as irresistible as a péniche on the Seine is an apartment in Manhattan, but mine is three blocks from an express subway stop and has views of the Hudson, so this was also an opportunity to reciprocate. I don't remember as many visits from Susan and John here, though, as to Paris or even to 12 Mt. Auburn...maybe the balance tipped steeply toward my escaping from the pressures of the single life in grad school to the farm.
However, finding a place of my own on West End Avenue had a certain cachet for me, as John's brother Topper had long kept a lease on a rent-stabilized apartment on West End, and I lived in Manhattan almost a year before I set foot on what to me was a legendary street.
