The Beginning

Growing up, I noticed that when some of my friends needed help or advice, they went to their parents and talked to their friends about what their parents had to say. I rarely did this. I didn't talk much with my parents; mostly they just yelled at us. I have a brother, younger, and a sister, older. I could do without both of them sometimes. I often wondered whether when I grew up, would I have children of my own? Based upon how much work we seemed to be for my parents, I decided that I would be a career woman. No kids for me!

This confused me - why would anyone talk to their parents about anything?  Parents were a source of rules and "nos" - my parents rarely did anything for me.
