Background

The history of progression toward the acceptance of gay marriage hit a milestone in 2003 when a Massachusetts high court decision gave legal credence to gay marriage. Vermont and Connecticut jumped in to support of same sex unions by legalizing civil unions. The ruling helped to spark nationwide efforts to legalize gay marriage. It also sparked an onslaught of attempts to ban same-sex unions. For example, California law makers tried to put a ban on same-sex unions but Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill, leaving it up to supreme court (Encyclopedia Brittanica).
