The Sailor's Lament
Jeremy Ashkenas
Two — Decomposed
For nine days, evil winds blew us across the surface of the sea, but on the tenth we reached the island Djerba, that I had heard some whispers of. They say a race of men live there who subsist on vegetable splendor, eating nothing aside from lotus flowers. We anchored there to take in fresh water. A cool breeze blew down from the north, and we had our lunch on the dunes nearby the ships. When we had finished, eaten and drunk our fill, and our memories of the terrible winds had subsided, I asked three of my men to walk inland, and see what sort of people these Lotophagi might be.
