After confirming Gatsby's death, Tom bolted back to the boat and made his way back home with haste. Tom had succeeded in killing Gatsby and had effectively preserved his relationship with Daisy. Tom's remaining actions required evading capture. He had to maintain a sense of innocence so that no-one would come over to investigate.

While Tom mused how to throw suspicion away from him, Daisy returned with a strange expression on her face. It was clear that she had enjoyed her trip, as she had made several purchases, but she was undoubtedly distracted.

"When Jordan and I returned from the city, we saw many police cars at Gatsby's house across the bay. I do hope Gatsby is alright. He hasn't been feeling himself for a while now. What could have happened?" inquired Daisy, rightfully confused.

"I haven't the slightest idea," Tom responded, his face buried in a newspaper. Tom then tried to change the subject. "Did you enjoy your trip?"

Daisy remained concerned about Gatsby. "Yes, spending time without care was splendid. However, we need to see how Gatsby is. I hope he is still doing well."

Observing that Daisy remained distressed about Gatsby and unconvinced that all could be well, Tom reluctantly agreed to visit Gatsby at West Egg, although discontent regarding Daisy's apparent attachment to him. As they approached the crime scene, Tom became increasingly nervous. He did not want to get caught for his crime and end up in jail. Still very young, Tom had much to do in life.
