Two Friends

"'They're a rotten crowd,' I shouted across the lawn.
'You're worth the whole damn bunch put together."
I've always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because I disapproved of him from beginning to end. First he nodded politely, and then his face broke into that radiant and understanding smile..." - Fitzgerald page 154

Nick did not always approve of Gatsby, and they may have not had the best of relationships, but in the end they ended up being friends.

"'Were you a friend of my boy's, Mr. ---?'
'We were close friends.'" - Fitzgerald page 168

This confession, albeit posthumous, was genuine. The origin of this strange friendship is what we will be following through two separate paths that meet at the end.
