The Reaction

Gatsby sat in the front seat of the car in awe, as he looked at his lover -- Daisy lay crushed from the impact of the accident. Myrtle choked on her last few breaths and she lay helplessly on the ground in front of the car. Wilson ran over, raging, after hearing the loud screeching of the accident. His teary, red eyes met Gatsby's as they experienced a moment of mutual sympathy, until anger once again intervened.

Daisy Buchanan is the gorgeous wife of Tom Buchanan and the object of Jay Gatsby's attention. She may have had legitimate feelings for Jay when they were younger, but when he was penniless and had to go to war, she quickly moved on to  the handsome and wealthy Tom Buchanan. She is seen as an unreliable and irresponsible, childish woman.

She has been quoted saying, "That's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." (Fitzgerald, 17)
