Nick considered Gatsby a
fool; even though he had lost everything
leaving would not solve the problem. As Nick left Gatsby’s house he
found a note lying on the floor; it was from Gatsby. The note said,
“To
my dearest friend Nick, thank you for helping me out last night, I
really appreciated it. It seems though that my time in this place has
come to an end. I have lost everything that was important to me. West
Egg has nothing left for me; I do know that you will disagree with my
decision, but I feel as if this is something that I just have to do. I
won’t be taking anything but two pictures, a note, and the cloths I am
wearing. Goodbye my friend, hopefully our paths will meet again in the
future. Your friend Jay Gatsby er um, why not… James Gatz.” As it
turned out, Nick had never heard from Gatsby again and he just assumed
that Gatsby had passed. Nick later wrote in his memoirs that
Gatsby
embodied the 1920’s as a whole. He started out great but crashed and
burned.
